ECOFTAC SIG28 Summer School

Combustion Course Emphasizing Energy Transition

24th - 28th February 2025
Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands and in hybrid form

Organiser:
Rob Bastiaans, Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands

Location: in Hybrid form at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) However, participation in-person will be promoted.

Introduction:

The event is to attract junior researchers (PhD students & PostDocs) and industrial researchers needing education in experimental and modelling approaches to both laminar and turbulent flames.

Contents of Talks/ Highlights of Presentations and Discussions:

The proposed international course aims at bringing the participants to the forefront of modern computational and experimental methods for premixed and non-premixed combustion processes. It will start with the provision of basic insight into the underlying physical/chemical principles and mathematical/physical descriptions. Specific attention will be given to carbon neutral energy, looking at conversion of H2, NH3, biomass, methanol, metals, etc., with inclusion of practical applications.

All presentations will be made available to participants using a shared drive, partly in advance, partly afterwards (slides updates and video recordings).

Programme:

The course will be given in a 5-day programme and will focus on:

  • the governing equations for chemically reacting flows,
  • state-of-the-art models for laminar and turbulent flames derived, by means of which their physical and chemical behaviour are analysed.
  • computational issues for modelling above systems numerically .
  • the use of laser-diagnostic methods, such as LIF, Raman, CARS, and PIV, to measure local species concentrations, temperatures, and flow velocities in high-temperature, chemically reacting flow systems.
  • combustion of liquid and solid fuels
  • practical applications will be treated for several examples, such as IC engines, gas turbines and furnaces.

Combustion course emphasizing energy transition

Schedule of the course

A visit to the labs of the Power and Flow (P&F) group will be held on the third day and a conference dinner on the fourth day
(for the live attending participants), probably at The Trafalgar Pub in Eindhoven.

The summer school will be organized as activity of SIG 28, "Reactive Flows" (but it also covers subject areas of SIG’s 1, 5, 15, 54 and 55).
It continues the tradition of summer/winter schools on combustion held at TU/e in 2005, 2010, 2016, 2019 and 2022.
